Skully Cap

What can you do with a skull cap? Plenty!

Doctors and nurses wear skull caps (or scrub caps) to secure their hair during surgery.

Chefs wear skull caps to keep hair out of their twice-braised beef.

Motorcycle riders, football players, and construction workers wear skull caps to make their helmets and hard hats more comfortable. (And to look super cool, of course.)

This week Rob is working on a totally rad, custom skull cap. Make it out of superheros, Harry Potter prints, or a gnarly Indian Motorcycle design, and you’re guaranteed to be the coolest dude around!

Rare Bear

Rare Science is an organization dedicated to giving hope to children with rare diseases. Not only do they pursue cures, they also provide support and comfort to these young patients.

Quilters and sewists can lend a helping hand by participating in the Rare Bear program. This week I’ll teach you how to construct a unique teddy bear that will be gifted to a child dealing with a rare disease. It’s a fun, simple way to use our talents for good. Continuous Zipper Pouch

A Continuous Zipper Pouch is made out of one zipper – that’s all! No fabric. No lining or foundation. Nada. Just one long strip of interlocking teeth stitched into all sorts of cool shapes! This project can be customized to fit a variety of small objects: pencils, coins, makeup, you name it.

Walking Foot and Stitch in the Ditch Sewing Tutorial

Stitch in the ditch is a style of machine quilting that simply follows the seam lines of the quilt top. The trouble is, all those layers of fabric and batting can really bog down the operation.

My advice? Swap out your presser foot for a walking foot. The walking foot is like “4-wheel drive” for your machine. It gently guides the top layer of fabric in sync with the feed dogs, so everything stays smooth and properly sandwiched.

Lined Zipper Pouch

Let’s talk zippers.

Zipper installation is a must for any sewist, but it can be pretty intimidating at first, so this week I’m making it easy. I’m working on a simple zippered pouch that is designed to fit a small 1st aid kit. (Of course, you can customize your pouch to fit anything under the sun!)

Reverse Appliqué Snowflake Quilt

Do you remember making snowflakes in grade school? We’d fold the paper into an itty-bitty triangle, snip out shapes with little safety scissors, and then open it up to reveal a frosty masterpiece. Good times!

Folded Fabric Yoga Mat Bag

A few weeks ago I demonstrated how to build a thick, sturdy Folded Strips Bag out of jelly roll strips. Today I’m expanding on that concept with a Folded Fabric Yoga Mat Bag. The strips are folded and stitched together the same way, but this bag is designed to fit a rolled up yoga mat.
